This blog is intended to be a space for the Sunup Livonia community to share their stories. Storytelling - the kind that shares our real, lived experiences - is central to human connection, learning, and healing.
Tragically, the stories and experiences of the BIPOC community have long been misrepresented, suppressed, or erased altogether from mainstream media.
To this day, Black creators on social media are silenced in favor of white creators who steal their content (Source: NPR). In fact, racism has been baked right into our algorithms.
As Jane Chung, Big Tech Accountability Advocate for Public Citizen explains, “In many cases, unless algorithms are intentionally designed to account for the legacy of and ongoing systems of discrimination, inequality, and bias, they will replicate and exacerbate racial inequity.” (Source: Public Citizen).
Issues of racism on this scale are of course complicated. But the best solutions are always simple. They always take us back to the basics. Back to our humanity. In this case, that means giving the misrepresented, suppressed, and erased voices a place to tell their stories.
